Akhilesh Yadav Criticises Women's Reservation Bill Amid Caste Count Concerns

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has accused the Union government of hastily advancing the women's reservation Bill without sufficient consultation. He expressed concerns that the Bill, which proposes to reserve 33% of seats for women in Parliament and state assemblies, is linked to the upcoming 2027 Census. The government plans to increase Lok Sabha seats from 550 to 850, using the 2011 Census for delimitation. Southern states fear a reduction in their representation, with Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister MK Stalin voicing apprehensions about potential imbalances. The proposed legislation requires a two-thirds majority to pass, while the delimitation bill can be approved with a simple majority. The women's reservation initiative aims to enhance women's participation in governance, with implementation expected for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
