Wisconsin Reports First Measles Death in Over 30 Years

Wisconsin has recorded its first measles death in more than 30 years, involving an infant, according to the state Department of Health Services. This marks the third measles death in the US within the past week, equalling the total for all of 2025. The US is experiencing a surge in measles cases, with 4,852 infections reported across at least 45 states, as vaccination rates decline. The outbreak in Wisconsin has resulted in nine hospitalizations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that the US's status as a measles-eliminated country is at risk due to ongoing transmission. Since August, over 42,000 doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine have been administered in Wisconsin, which is 97% effective after two doses.
