Russia Claims Ukrainian Troops Trapped, Peace Plan Deadline Approaches

On November 22, fighting intensified in Ukraine as Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reported that around 5,000 Ukrainian troops are trapped by Russian forces near the Oskil River in Kharkiv. Russia's Ministry of Defence announced the capture of several settlements in eastern Ukraine, while Ukraine maintained defensive positions in Pokrovsk. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy faces a deadline to approve a US-backed peace plan by Thursday. Zelenskyy has committed to working with Washington but emphasized national interests. Meanwhile, the US issued a general licence allowing certain transactions related to a nuclear project in Hungary involving Russian banks. Ukraine plans to appoint a new supervisory board at Energoatom amid a corruption scandal involving a $100 million kickback scheme. Poland's Prime Minister accused Russia of orchestrating sabotage acts to destabilise the country.
