New Jabalpur Facility to Overhaul 80 Tanks Annually for Indian Army
The Indian Army's armoured fleet will enhance maintenance capabilities with a new facility at Vehicle Factory, Jabalpur. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the ₹472-crore T-Series Tanks Overhaul Project on August 27. The facility aims to overhaul 80 T-72 and T-90 main battle tanks (MBTs) each year, addressing a portion of the Army's annual requirement of 230 tanks. Currently, the Heavy Vehicles Factory in Avadi manages around 150 tanks annually. The overhaul process involves comprehensive restoration to ensure operational readiness, allowing tanks to return to frontline service. This initiative is part of India's broader strategy to reduce reliance on foreign military supplies and develop an indigenous defence ecosystem, supporting local industries and enhancing combat preparedness amid ongoing global supply chain challenges.
