UN Committee Raises Concerns Over India's Human Rights Practices
The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (UNCERD) expressed serious concerns about human rights violations in India, particularly against ethnic and ethno-religious groups. In its findings released on August 25, the committee highlighted issues such as extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detentions, and torture by law enforcement. It noted that approximately 52 million names have been removed from electoral rolls under the Special Intensive Revision process, disproportionately affecting Bengali-speaking Muslims in West Bengal and Assam. The committee urged India to address hate speech and discrimination against migrants, particularly Rohingya and Bengali-speaking Muslims, and recommended a review of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the National Register of Citizens. The UNCERD also called for the strengthening of the National Human Rights Commission to ensure accountability and protect the rights of marginalized communities.
