Women’s Reservation in Lok Sabha Faces New Legislative Challenges

The Lok Sabha and State Legislatures may see women’s reservation implemented sooner than expected. The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026, proposed to amend Article 334A to allow immediate operationalisation based on the 2011 Census. However, it failed to secure the necessary majority on April 17. The government had previously mandated a fresh Census and delimitation before implementing the 2023 Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, passed in September 2023. Following the recent legislative developments, the Opposition has renewed calls to amend Article 334A(1) to expedite women’s reservation. The ongoing Census 2027, which began on April 1, 2026, may not be counted under the current provisions, raising further questions about the timeline for women’s representation in governance.
