China Demands Investigation into Death of Researcher in US Custody

China has called for a thorough investigation into the death of Danhao Wang, a Chinese researcher at the University of Michigan, who died on 20 March after falling from a campus building. Wang had been subjected to questioning by US law enforcement regarding his research shortly before his death. The University of Michigan's Division of Public Safety is investigating the incident as a possible act of self-harm. Wang, who had been at the university since August 2022, focused on semiconductor materials and had 112 publications. The Chinese foreign ministry has criticized the US for its treatment of Chinese scholars, urging a full investigation and accountability for the incident amid rising scrutiny of Chinese nationals in the US.
