New Labour Codes Ease Gratuity Eligibility for Fixed-Term Employees

The Indian government has introduced new labour codes, consolidating 29 laws into four comprehensive codes. A significant change allows fixed-term employees to qualify for gratuity after one year of service, compared to the previous five-year requirement. This adjustment aims to ensure parity between fixed-term and regular staff, granting them similar salary structures and benefits. Additionally, the codes permit work shifts of 8 to 12 hours, with overtime compensated at double the regular rate. The new regulations also define gig work and allow for work-from-home arrangements, enhancing social security for gig workers. These reforms are part of the Centre's initiative to modernise labour regulations and improve workers' welfare.
