Global Investors Inject $10 Billion into Indian Hospital Chains

Over the past five years, global investors including Blackstone, KKR, and TPG have invested approximately $10 billion in Indian hospital chains, as reported by EY. This influx of capital has facilitated the expansion of healthcare facilities and technology in a country facing a shortage of hospital beds, with only about 1.3 beds per 1,000 people. Despite the growth, concerns have emerged regarding rising healthcare costs and access to care, prompting a parliamentary committee to recommend a review of foreign investment rules in healthcare. The private hospital sector is projected to see revenue growth of up to 15% by fiscal 2027, amidst ongoing debates about treatment costs and insurance coverage. Medical inflation has reached as high as 13% annually, raising questions about the affordability of private healthcare services.
