US Senators Propose Bill Targeting Russian Oil Buyers Including India

A bipartisan group of US senators has introduced a bill that could enable President Donald Trump to impose sanctions on five countries, including India, for purchasing Russian oil. The proposed legislation allows tariffs up to 100% on major buyers of Russian oil, with India among those identified. In June, India's imports of Russian crude surged by 34%, reaching EUR 4.5 billion, which constituted 83% of its total Russian fossil fuel imports. The bill aims to exert economic pressure on Russia amid ongoing conflicts and is expected to be voted on in the Senate before the end of August. The legislation has been narrowed down from earlier drafts that could have affected up to 63 countries, focusing instead on a select few buyers. The bill must pass both the Senate and House before reaching the President for approval.
