Over 17,000 Troops to Join Philippines-US Joint Military Exercises

More than 17,000 military personnel will participate in the Balikatan exercises from April 20 to May 8, marking the largest joint drills involving the Philippines, the US, and other nations. Troops from Australia, Japan, Canada, France, and New Zealand will also join the exercises, which aim to enhance warfighting skills amid rising tensions with China. This year's participation surpasses the previous record of 16,000 personnel set in 2024. The exercises will focus on maritime security, coastal defense, and joint operations. Japan will participate in combat drills for the first time under a new military agreement with the Philippines. The drills occur against a backdrop of territorial disputes in the South China Sea and recent confrontations between Chinese and Philippine forces.
