US Vice President Announces Crackdown on H-1B Visa Misuse

US Vice President JD Vance announced a crackdown on alleged misuse of the H-1B visa programme, stating that the Department of Labour has initiated investigations and issued subpoenas against entities exploiting the system. The H-1B programme allows US employers to hire foreign professionals for specialized roles, with a cap of 65,000 new visas annually, plus 20,000 for advanced degree holders. Vance emphasized the need to protect American jobs, claiming that large corporations and foreign fraudsters have been undermining wages for US workers. Nearly 730,000 H-1B visa holders currently reside in the US, along with about 550,000 dependants, making this announcement particularly significant for Indian professionals who represent the largest share of H-1B recipients.
