UN Rapporteurs Raise Concerns Over Voter Deletions in India

Three United Nations Special Rapporteurs have expressed concerns regarding the Election Commission of India's Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which reportedly led to the deletion of millions of Muslim voters. A report dated May 1, 2026, highlights that 95% of deleted voters in Nandigram were Muslims, despite them comprising only 25% of the electorate there. The Rapporteurs have given the Indian government a 60-day timeline to respond to allegations of human rights violations and the opaque processes involved in the SIR. They have requested disaggregated data on excluded voters and details on the appeals process. This communication follows a similar inquiry in December 2018 related to the National Register of Citizens in Assam, which raised concerns about the exclusion of minorities.
