UN Rapporteurs Raise Concerns Over Voter Deletions in India
Three United Nations Special Rapporteurs have expressed concerns regarding the Election Commission of India's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, which reportedly led to the deletion of millions of Muslim voters. A report dated May 1, 2026, highlights that in Nandigram, 95% of the deleted voters were Muslims, despite them constituting only 25% of the electorate. The report outlines issues with the SIR, including opaque AI systems and inadequate time for voters to rectify documentation. It also questions the framing of deletions as targeting 'illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.' The Indian government has 60 days to respond to the concerns raised, which include requests for data on excluded voters and details on the appeals process. India is a signatory to treaties that protect minority rights and the right to vote.
