US Panel Urges Sanctions Against RSS Chief During US Visit

Updated 2 days ago: The new version specifies that USCIRF Chair Dr Asif Mahmood stated conditions for religious minorities in India have worsened and cites incidents of violence and discrimination, while also adding that USCIRF is a bipartisan US government body that monitors global religious freedom and makes non-binding policy recommendations.

The US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has called for the revocation of Mohan Bhagwat's visa ahead of his scheduled speech in New York City on August 29. The panel expressed concerns over religious freedom violations in India and urged the US government to consider sanctions against RSS members and Indian officials involved. USCIRF Chair Dr Asif Mahmood stated that conditions for religious minorities in India have worsened, citing incidents of violence and discrimination. In response, India's Ministry of External Affairs dismissed the panel's claims, labelling USCIRF as biased against India. The USCIRF is a bipartisan US government body that monitors global religious freedom and makes policy recommendations, which are not binding.
