No Evidence Linking India to Nijjar Murder, Says Former Envoy
Former Indian high commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Verma, stated that Canadian authorities found no evidence linking the Indian government to the 2023 murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Following an investigation involving the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and US authorities, it was confirmed that the killing was a result of gang rivalry, not state involvement. Verma, who left Canada in October 2024 after being named a 'person of interest', described allegations made by former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as politically motivated. The investigation led to charges against Lawrence Bishnoi and Satinderjeet Singh for ordering the assassination, with 24 arrests linked to crime syndicates. Despite tensions between India and Canada, diplomatic communications have resumed, and economic discussions are progressing.
