Transgender Persons Eligible for Existing Reservation Quotas, Says Centre

The Centre informed the Supreme Court that transgender persons can access existing reservation quotas in admissions and government jobs, including 50% for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and Socially and Educationally Backward Communities, as well as the 10% for Economically Weaker Sections. The Social Justice Ministry stated that the entire marginalised population, including transgender individuals, is covered under these categories. However, transgender persons are not recognised as a separate class for reservation. This response follows a contempt petition regarding the government's compliance with a 2014 Supreme Court judgment that directed the protection of transgender rights and their inclusion in educational institutions and public appointments. The National Portal for Transgender Persons, launched in 2020, has recorded over 22 lakh visits and issued more than 12,000 identity cards.
