India's Trade Negotiations Require Diverse Approaches, Says Finance Minister

India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that a single template for trade negotiations with major economies is not feasible due to varying tariffs, geopolitical risks, and supply-chain issues. Speaking at the Munich Leaders’ Meeting, she noted that the ongoing India-US trade talks, which began in February 2025, differ from the recently concluded India-EU negotiations. Bilateral trade between India and the US increased to $140.77 billion in fiscal year 2026, with India's exports rising to $87.31 billion. Sitharaman highlighted the need for tailored approaches, especially with China, where India's trade deficit has widened. She also mentioned India's plans to revise its bilateral investment protection agreements, aiming to conclude deals with at least three more countries by December.
