Maharashtra to Implement 10% Water Cuts Amid Drought Conditions

Maharashtra will impose a minimum 10% water cut starting 16 October, affecting all urban and rural local bodies. This decision follows the declaration of a drought in 265 of the state's 358 talukas, covering 74% of the region. The cuts are a response to low rainfall and limited dam storage. Industries are mandated to recycle at least 30% of their water usage. Maharashtra, listed as India's wealthiest state with over ₹63 lakh crore in wealth, is home to 112 billionaires. The government prioritises drinking water needs and plans to manage water resources until 31 August 2027, including measures to prevent illegal extraction. A central government team will assess drought conditions and recommend assistance for affected farmers.
