TRAI Proposes New Licence for Satellite Network Providers in India
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended a new licence allowing satellite firms to operate communication networks and rent them to telecom operators. This proposal, termed the Satellite Communication Network (SCN) provider authorisation, would enable companies like Starlink and Eutelsat OneWeb to enter India as network providers. The licence would be valid for 20 years and renewable, with an entry fee of ₹37.5 lakh and a licence fee of 8% of adjusted gross revenue. Telecom companies could offer satellite services without building their own networks. TRAI also suggested allowing direct-to-device services, enabling satellites to connect directly to smartphones in areas lacking mobile towers. The recommendations are not binding and require approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
