Supreme Court Highlights Diwali Gifts' Role in Delhi's Pollution Crisis

The Supreme Court has identified the culture of exchanging Diwali gifts as a contributor to vehicular pollution in Delhi, where the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 389, nearing the severe category. Chief Justice Surya Kant emphasized the need for a 'cultural shift' to address pollution, noting that vehicles from across the country exacerbate the issue. Stubble burning contributes 14% to pollution, and the court discussed the impact of traffic congestion and inadequate public transport. The court urged awareness of traditional practices, suggesting a return to using diyas during Diwali. Measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) are in effect, including stricter vehicle monitoring and water sprinkling operations to mitigate pollution.
