Supreme Court Orders Police Report on Assault of Lawyer
The Supreme Court has requested a status report from the Delhi Police regarding the alleged assault of lawyer Pankaj Sharma at his home last week. Sharma, who sustained grievous injuries and required eight stitches, claims he was threatened for refusing to withdraw a case against politically influential assailants. The court, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, has instructed a deputy police commissioner to file the report and ensure Sharma's safety. An FIR was registered on July 11, but Sharma alleges police inaction and bias towards the accused. The Supreme Court Bar Association has condemned the incident and called for action against the assailants, emphasizing the implications for citizen safety amid claims of police negligence.
