Supreme Court Critiques Delhi's Air Pollution Control Measures
The Supreme Court on November 6, 2026, criticized the effectiveness of measures like vehicle bans and construction halts to address air pollution in Delhi, describing them as 'old, tried and failed tools.' The court noted that the Air Quality Index (AQI) was nearing 400, indicating severe pollution levels. Chief Justice Surya Kant highlighted the influx of vehicles from neighbouring states and the impact of commercialisation during festivals like Deepavali on air quality. The court suggested that public awareness and a return to traditional practices could be more effective than restrictions. Meanwhile, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) is prosecuting officials in Gurugram for failing to implement dust mitigation measures, following inspections that revealed significant dust violations across multiple road stretches.
