Supreme Court Questions School Closures Amid Delhi's Severe Air Quality

The Supreme Court expressed reluctance to close schools or shift to online classes as Delhi's air quality reached 'severe' levels. The court highlighted the importance of expert recommendations and questioned the validity of claims regarding children's vulnerability to pollution. On November 3, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi averaged 391, with hourly readings exceeding 453. The court noted that poor air quality has become common in the city during this season and emphasized the need to prevent further deterioration. Under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), hybrid classes are recommended at higher pollution stages rather than automatic closures. Previous measures included hybrid classes for younger students during severe pollution episodes, but the court aims to avoid exacerbating educational inequalities.
