Supreme Court Criticises Rajasthan for River Pollution Management Failures

The Supreme Court reprimanded the Rajasthan government for failing to prevent pollution in the Jojari, Bandi, and Luni rivers, stating it violates citizens' right to life. The court initiated suo motu proceedings in September due to severe contamination affecting nearly 2 million residents. An oversight committee, led by a former judge, has been established to create a River Restoration and Rejuvenation Blueprint. The court highlighted systemic failures, including industrial waste dumping and inadequate sewage treatment capacity. It noted that environmental degradation has severely impacted health, agriculture, and local economies. The committee is tasked with preparing its first report within eight weeks, with the next hearing scheduled for February 27.
