Supreme Court Orders Uniform Trauma Care Policy Across India
The Supreme Court has mandated a uniform trauma care policy for all states and Union territories, to be implemented within three months. This includes a common helpline number '112' for trauma victims and protections for Good Samaritans. The court's directive follows National Crime Records Bureau data indicating that 177,000 of 467,000 traumatic deaths are due to road accidents. The policy aims to enhance emergency response through a standardized medical rescue protocol and improved public awareness. States are also required to ensure ambulances are equipped with GPS and to integrate emergency medical training into curricula. Additionally, the court has set timelines for operationalising cashless treatment schemes for accident victims and establishing a Coordinated Trauma Registry.
