Supreme Court Acquits Maharashtra School Officials in 2020 Death Case
The Supreme Court has acquitted two school officials in Maharashtra of culpable homicide charges related to the 2020 death of a 12-year-old girl, Bharti Belsare. The court ruled that the administrators could not be held criminally responsible for the collapse of a poorly constructed pillar, which resulted in her death. The justices stated that mere negligence or breach of duty does not constitute criminal liability without proof of intention or gross negligence. The incident occurred on February 15, 2020, at Prashnachinha Adivasi Ashram Shala, where several other girls were also injured. The court emphasized that the contractor responsible for the construction might bear more direct responsibility for the tragedy.
