Bangladesh Faces Earthquake Risk After Recent 5.7-Magnitude Tremor
A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh, resulting in at least 10 fatalities and significant building damage, particularly in Dhaka. The Dhaka district administration reported damage to at least 14 buildings, while Rajuk indicated over 50 structures were affected. Experts warn that the recent tremors may be foreshocks of a larger earthquake, urging immediate evaluations of damaged buildings. Bangladesh is among the world's 20 most earthquake-vulnerable cities, situated on active fault lines. In 2022, Rajuk identified 42 high-risk buildings requiring urgent action, but many directives remain unimplemented. Seismologist Syed Humayun Akhter noted that the Indo-Burma subduction zone is accumulating strain, increasing the risk of a major seismic event.
