Uttar Pradesh to Implement New Speed Limit Policy Amid Rising Fatalities
Uttar Pradesh plans to adopt context-based speed limits to address rising road fatalities, following West Bengal's lead. The new policy aims to reduce speed limits in school zones to as low as 25 kmph and in high-pedestrian areas. Uttar Pradesh recorded 24,118 road fatalities in 2024, a rise from 21,227 in 2021, contributing to India's total of 177,177 fatalities. The UP transport department has signed an MoU with IIT-Kharagpur to develop a statewide road safety action plan, which includes speed management guidelines and public awareness campaigns. The initiative also proposes identifying accident-prone areas and deploying speed cameras for enforcement. A pilot project is expected to be launched in a district by the end of January as part of Road Safety Month activities.
