Government Defends Delimitation Process Amid Southern States' Concerns
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju addressed concerns regarding the delimitation process, stating that southern states will not lose seats despite their successful population control measures. The government plans to increase Lok Sabha seats from 550 to 850 and implement 33% women’s reservation by 2029. Analysis indicates that the southern states' representation may decrease from 20.1% to 18%, while Uttar Pradesh and Bihar could see an increase from 22.1% to 25.1%. Rijiju asserted that the delimitation commission will ensure fair distribution of seats across regions. The bills related to this process will be discussed in Parliament from April 16 to 18. Opposition parties have expressed concerns about the impact on political representation for southern states, describing the proposed changes as detrimental to federalism.
