India Aims for 5,000 Global Capability Centres by 2030
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced India's ambition to establish around 5,000 Global Capability Centres (GCCs) by 2030, up from over 2,100 currently. These centres employ 2.3 million professionals and generate nearly $100 billion in annual revenues. Sitharaman highlighted that India hosts more than half of the world's GCCs, with one new centre being established daily. The focus is shifting from cost efficiency to capability leadership, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence and engineering research. The government plans to extend GCC growth into Tier-II and Tier-III cities, enhancing regional development. Initiatives in the Union Budget 2026-27 aim to support this sector, including a Unified Safe Harbour Regime and investments in digital infrastructure. Nearly two-thirds of Fortune Global 2000 companies have yet to set up GCCs in India, indicating significant investment potential.
