Shipping Minister Calls for Transparency Amid Strait of Hormuz Crisis

Union Minister for Shipping Sarbananda Sonowal has directed the marine regulator to ensure transparency in port operations and prevent profiteering by handlers. This comes in response to the ongoing crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, which has disrupted global crude oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. During a recent review, Sonowal emphasized the need for real-time monitoring and swift interventions to maintain smooth maritime traffic and clear backlogs. The government is implementing measures such as waivers on certain rents and concessions on reefer charges to mitigate supply disruptions. India relies heavily on imports for its energy needs, with nearly 90% of its crude oil and significant amounts of liquefied natural gas sourced from the Gulf, making operational continuity crucial for exporters and importers.
