Measles Outbreak in Pennsylvania Claims Two Lives, Over 400 Infected
Pennsylvania is facing a measles outbreak that has resulted in two deaths and over 400 infections. The outbreak, concentrated in Lancaster County, has seen 94 new cases in the past week. Vaccination rates have dropped below the levels needed to prevent outbreaks, with only 86% of kindergartners in Lancaster County vaccinated. Governor Josh Shapiro attributed the decline in vaccination rates to misinformation spread by US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has disputed these claims. This year, the US has reported 2,777 measles cases across 45 states, marking the highest level in over 30 years. The Pennsylvania Department of Health has administered 3,100 MMR vaccines since the outbreak began in late April.
