India Seeks Legal Aid for 16 Detained Sailors in Iran

Updated 2 days ago: The Indian Embassy is now coordinating with the Iranian navy instead of the vessel's UAE-based owner, and the vessel was intercepted by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, which accused it of smuggling 6,000 MT of fuel, while the Indian Consulate in Dubai is also involved for legal representation and support.

The Indian Embassy in Tehran has requested consular access for 16 Indian crew members detained on the MT Valiant Roar since December 8, 2025. Despite multiple requests since December 14, access has not been granted by Iranian authorities. The embassy is coordinating with the Iranian navy to ensure the crew's welfare, including food and water supplies. The vessel was intercepted by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, which accused it of smuggling 6,000 MT of fuel. The Indian Consulate in Dubai is also engaging with the ship-owning company for legal representation and support. The situation is expected to undergo judicial proceedings in Iran, while the embassy continues to press for timely access and resolution.
