Supreme Court Seeks Responses on MSP Plea for Farmers

The Supreme Court has requested responses from the Centre and other authorities regarding a plea to consider states' proposals on the cost of cultivation when determining the minimum support price (MSP). The bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, noted the complexity of calculating costs due to variations across states. The plea highlights the financial crisis faced by farmers, citing over 17,000 farmer suicides in Maharashtra in the last five years. It argues that the MSP is often set below the actual cost of production. The petitioners seek directions for complete procurement of crops under MSP based on accurate cultivation costs and the establishment of procurement centres across the country. They also request waivers for outstanding agricultural loans for farmers due to ongoing failures in the MSP framework.
