Supreme Court Denies Bail to Doctor Linked to 26 Child Deaths

The Supreme Court has denied bail to paediatrician Praveen Soni, arrested in October 2025 for prescribing Coldrif cough syrup linked to the deaths of 26 children in Madhya Pradesh. The court cited the seriousness of the case, noting that charges were recently framed and that Soni's relative was involved as a stockist. Laboratory tests revealed diethylene glycol levels in the syrup at 46.28%, far exceeding the permissible limit of 0.1%. Children aged two to four were prescribed the syrup, leading to acute kidney injuries. Soni faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. His bail plea may be renewed after one year.
