Japan's Yuki Imai Detained in Russia on Espionage Charges
Russian authorities have detained Yuki Imai, a journalist from Hokkaido Shimbun, on espionage charges. A Moscow court has ordered him to be held in custody for two months until Dec. 12. The Federal Security Service (FSB) alleges Imai collected information on Russia's defensive capabilities for a Japanese intelligence agency. He was arrested in Sakhalin, a day before his departure from Russia. This incident adds to rising tensions between Russia and Japan, which have been strained by recent sanctions and diplomatic disputes. The Japanese government has not yet responded to the arrest.
