Lao National Deported After Minnesota Governor's Controversial Pardon
Tou Lue Vang, a Lao national, was deported by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement after his legal status was terminated following a pardon from Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Vang was convicted in 2006 for first-degree criminal sexual conduct against a 10-year-old girl. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the deportation was necessary for public safety, criticizing the timing of the pardon just days before Vang's scheduled removal. Vang had entered the US in 1994 and was granted legal status, which was revoked after his conviction. An immigration judge issued a final order of removal against him in October 2006.
