Rhode Island report reveals clergy abuse of over 300 children
A report by Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha details that 75 Catholic clergy members molested more than 300 victims since 1950. The findings stem from a multiyear investigation into the Catholic Diocese of Providence, initiated in 2019. The diocese acknowledged the issue but contested the report's implications, stating there are no credibly accused clergy in active ministry. The investigation revealed that accused priests were often transferred without proper investigations. Since 2020, four priests have been charged with sexual abuse, with only 20 individuals facing criminal charges overall. The report aims to prompt legal reforms to address sexual abuse cases more effectively.
