Investigation Underway After Russian Lab Worker Dies from Pneumonia

A 28-year-old researcher from the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute died on 1 October after being hospitalized with pneumonia of unknown origin. Following her death, nearly 200 individuals have been placed under medical observation in the Irkutsk region. The circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear, with reports suggesting possible exposure to a dangerous bacterium during lab work or a trip to Buryatia, where a plague outbreak was reported. Russian authorities have not confirmed the cause of death as pneumonic plague, although the US State Department is monitoring the situation closely. Quarantine measures have been implemented at local hospitals, and an investigation into health and safety violations is ongoing. Rospotrebnadzor stated that the sanitary situation in the region remains stable.
