India Seeks to Expand Domestic Manufacturing in Renewable Energy Sector

India's renewable energy industry has called for the government to extend its domestic manufacturing initiatives to include battery energy storage systems and other components. This request follows concerns over reliance on imports, particularly from China, amid discussions at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit. The Union ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) is considering extending the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) framework, currently applicable to solar modules and wind turbines, to additional components. The government has also approved a ₹14,500 crore viability gap funding scheme to support the development of 92 GWh of grid-scale energy storage capacity, which is crucial for integrating renewable power into the grid. This new capacity would represent a 170% increase over India's existing grid-scale storage capacity.
