MP A.A. Rahim Files Petition Over Alleged Police Misconduct

Rajya Sabha MP A.A. Rahim has approached the Supreme Court regarding the alleged illegal detention and custodial torture of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) members on October 11, 2026. The petition claims that police forcibly detained protesters during a demonstration at Connaught Place, where they demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Rahim has requested an independent inquiry, binding guidelines, and compensation from the Union government, naming the Home Ministry as a respondent. The petition alleges that detainees were held in a compartmentalised police van, subjected to physical abuse, and denied basic rights, including access to medical examination and communication with relatives. They were released after over seven hours in custody. The plea seeks to declare the detention practices as illegal and urges authorities to prevent custodial torture and ensure compliance with constitutional safeguards.
