Rajnath Singh Launches India's First Indigenous Fleet Support Ship
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched Surya, India's first indigenous fleet support ship, at Hindustan Shipyard Ltd in Visakhapatnam. This launch is part of a ₹19,000 crore project to build five such vessels, enhancing the navy's operational capabilities. The ships, each measuring 225 metres in length, will support replenishment at sea, allowing naval operations to continue without returning to port. Singh also laid the keel for another support ship and inaugurated upgraded facilities at the shipyard. The navy currently operates four fleet support vessels and aims for full self-reliance by 2047. The new infrastructure will enable the construction of larger ships, improving India's maritime capabilities.
