Indian Railways Alerts Zonal Managers on Signal Failures from Cable Cuts

The Indian Railways has issued an alert to Zonal Railways' general managers regarding frequent signal failures caused by cable cuts during ongoing infrastructure development. The alert highlights the serious safety risks associated with these disruptions, which could lead to catastrophic consequences. Despite repeated instructions for the protection of signal and telecommunication cables, incidents of damage continue to occur. The Railways is implementing safety enhancement projects, including the installation of Kavach, an automatic train protection system. Contractors responsible for cable cuts face penalties of up to ₹1 lakh for each incident. The alert follows several serious accidents linked to signal failures, including a collision in Odisha that resulted in approximately 296 fatalities and over 900 injuries. The Railways invests over ₹1 lakh crore annually on safety-related initiatives.
