Missing Indian Marine Engineer Confirmed Dead After Vessel Attack
Heramb Karmarkar, a Pune-based marine engineer, has been confirmed dead following the attack on the MV GFS Galaxy in the Strait of Hormuz. The Cyprus-flagged cargo vessel was struck by a projectile early Sunday, resulting in a fire and loss of propulsion. Karmarkar was the only crew member unaccounted for after the incident, which involved 24 crew members, including 11 Indians. The Royal Navy of Oman rescued 23 crew members. The Forward Seamen's Union of India criticized the delay in communication regarding Karmarkar's status and called for an independent investigation. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs condemned the attack and summoned Iranian diplomats, emphasizing the need for safe navigation in the region. Karmarkar's body is currently with the Oman Navy, awaiting repatriation to India for last rites.
