Modi's Central Asia Visit Focuses on Multilateral Engagements and Connectivity
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a four-day visit to Uzbekistan and the Kyrgyz Republic, focusing on multilateral platforms including the BRICS Summit and UN Security Council term for 2028-2029. The visit aims to address perceptions of India's waning interest in Central Asia, particularly since the last India-Central Asia Summit in 2022. Trade between India and Central Asia has increased from $500 million in 2010 to over $2 billion projected for 2025. However, geopolitical shifts have hindered connectivity, notably due to strained ties with Pakistan and challenges in the Chabahar port project. Modi's discussions will also include strategic concerns with Iran and Tajikistan regarding upcoming UN Security Council elections. Officials hope to set a date for the long-postponed India-Central Asia Summit during this visit.
