GTRI Calls for Overhaul of India's Import Tariff Structure

The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) has recommended a comprehensive reform of India's import tariff structure and customs administration. The think tank suggests moving towards zero duty on most industrial raw materials and a low standard duty of around 5% on finished goods over three years. It highlights that customs duties now account for only 6% of gross tax revenue, while nearly 90% of import value is concentrated in fewer than 10% of tariff lines. The report states that India's merchandise trade has surpassed $1.16 trillion, with 29% of GDP flowing through customs. GTRI urges the government to simplify customs processes and improve transparency in duty exemptions to enhance compliance and reduce trade costs.
