NIA Files Chargesheet Against Six Separatist Leaders in 1996 Violence Case
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against six senior leaders of the Hurriyat Conference in connection with a 1996 case of mob violence in Srinagar. The chargesheet names Shabir Ahmad Shah, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Abdul Ganie Lone, Javid Ahmad Mir, Shakeel Ahmad Bakshi, and Mohammad Yaqoob Wakeel. The leaders are charged under the Ranbir Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The incident occurred during a funeral procession for a slain terrorist, resulting in injuries to police personnel and damage to government vehicles. The NIA claims the violence was part of a pre-planned conspiracy to incite public disorder and promote separatist ideology. The agency took over the investigation in April 2026, following directives from the Union Home Ministry.
