NGT Seeks Centre, States' Response on Rising Heatwave Conditions

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has requested responses from the Centre and multiple States regarding extreme heat affecting health and productivity. In a suo motu case, the NGT cited a report indicating maximum temperatures reaching 48°C in Banda, Uttar Pradesh, with heatwave conditions persisting in Delhi. The tribunal emphasised the need for region-specific adaptation strategies and short- and long-term plans to address rising temperatures. It has directed the Union Ministry of Environment and several State authorities to file their responses by August 18. The NGT highlighted the urgency for dedicated research on heat risk and improved climate adaptation measures, noting that rising temperatures could impact water availability and basic needs.
