US Justice Department Subpoenas Four New York Times Journalists

The US Department of Justice has issued subpoenas to four journalists from The New York Times, following their reporting on security concerns regarding the new Air Force One aircraft gifted by Qatar. Federal agents delivered the subpoenas to reporters Julian E. Barnes, Eric Lipton, Tyler Pager, and Eric Schmitt, compelling them to testify before a grand jury in Manhattan. The subpoenas were authorized after discussions among senior Justice Department officials and FBI Director Kash Patel. The Justice Department stated that the reporters are not targets of the investigation, which focuses on those leaking classified information. The Times' reporting suggested the new aircraft lacked certain security features, a claim the White House has denied. The subpoenas have drawn criticism from media organisations and press freedom advocates, who argue they threaten journalistic protections.
